Transcript 0:00 Hey everyone, how's it going? This is Sean, and, uh, you're listening to Fireside by the Muskoka Almanac. Today we are joined by Kieran Day of Muskoka Beer Spa. Kieran, how are you today? I'm doing well. How are you? 0:10 I'm doing well. We were talking about this offline, braving the cold weather. Um, are you surviving or thriving? And it sounds like today we are surviving. It's pretty cold. We're surviving. Yeah? 0:21 Counting the days down before there is sunshine and warmth. That's it. And no snow. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 0:28 No, I think that's something everyone is looking forward to is the days where we can be on a dock somewhere nice, looking at some unfrozen water, and- Yes... uh, enjoying the sunshine. Perfect. Perfect. 0:40 Now, there's a lot of people that are probably thinking, "Okay, I've been to a spa. I've had a beer. What is a beer spa?" The best of w- both worlds. So yeah, the Muskoka Beer Spa, we are... You can come for a day visit. 0:54 You're also welcome to stay overnight as we do have cabins, uh, right on site. Um, we are a full spa, so, um, we've got quite a list of amenities. So we've got hot tubs, pools, saunas, steam room. 1:06 Uh, we have access to Clear Lake as well, and then we provide, like, paddleboards and kayaks and things like that for guests to use. 1:12 Uh, and then we do also have a cold bucket plunge, which is, like, a fun little, like, viral moment. 1:17 I feel like a lot of people use it for social media stuff too, um, just 'cause it's, like, a big tower with a big bucket of cold water, and then you, like, pull the string, um, and then it comes, like, crashing down. 1:26 So it's always, like, a, a fun little something. Yeah. Perfect. Yeah, no, that's for when we've forgotten all about winter. That's awesome. Now- When you wanna experience the cold again. Yeah. 1:36 Yeah, yeah, yeah, [laughs] yeah. Well, have you tried it before? I'm guessing you have. I have, yes. I have braved it before, but, like, on scorching hot days only. [laughs] That's my rule. Oh. 1:47 Um, and how would you describe it? Is it just as you'd think? It's just like a shot of cold water? Does the effect kind of quickly fade off? Yeah, like, I would say it's best to use it, like, after, like, coming... 1:57 It's positioned perfectly, so it's right by, like, the saunas and the steam room. So once you get out of that, I would say that you shouldn't think about it. 2:05 You should go directly to it and [laughs] just pull the string. 2:08 I prefer it just because it's, like, over, like, a cold plunge, just because I feel like the idea of submerging my body and having to, having to sit in it is a lot more challenging than just, like, ripping the Band-Aid, pull that string, and then it's done. 2:23 When it comes to working in a place that kind of blends, like, sauna, spa culture into craft beer energy, w- what's it like? 2:30 Like, that's gotta be such a unique vibe to cultivate, but then, you know, bringing all these unique things together, uh, that's, that is really interesting. 2:39 So what's it like to be a manager and help, like, bring all those unique components together into a really enjoyable guest experience? Yeah. 2:46 Uh, so, like, for the first part of your question, I would say, like, that's, uh, it's a tricky line that we try to balance. So we don't want to be necessarily a space where you're getting shushed constantly. 2:59 Um, it is meant to be more of a social environment. Yeah. But at the same time, like, we are trying to cultivate energy of relaxation still. So we, you know, we have music going on. 3:11 I would say on the weekends, uh, I try to strive for maybe a little bit more of, like, upbeat throwbacks that are happening on the weekend just 'cause it- our crowd definitely is a little bit more lively on the weekends. 3:22 Nice. Whereas during the weekday, you know, you throw on a Spotify playlist of, like, dock days or something like that that's a little bit more, like, chill. Yeah. 3:31 But again, it, it is more of, like, a social environment, and again, especially because we are licensed on the property, and we, um, have our own brewery, so we do serve our own beer that we make right next door, as well as our vodka sodas. 3:44 That's a new sort of addition to the family. Um, and then we do serve other types of drinks as well, so even if you're not necessarily a beer drinker, there's lots of options to choose from. 3:55 But yeah, with that sort of, like, social side of having drinks and things like that, like, we're trying to cultivate sort of an energy. Everything is very, like, family style, so it's not a lot of, like, personal spots. 4:07 I find a lot of people end up making friends with whoever's sort of there that day. 4:11 Um, 'cause, you know, you end up sitting in a sauna, and you end up chatting, and you've got your, you know, your Session Ale in hand and chit-chatting about life kinda thing. I think I'm definitely a weekend visitor. 4:20 I'll have to stop by on a weekend because, yeah, no, that sounds like an amazing time. 4:24 That's, that's great to hear that you're cultivating an environment where the social aspect is really taken into consideration, and, like, having a brewery on site. Talk about having your inventory close by, you know? 4:33 It's, you never have to run out somewhere last minute to pick something up. [laughs] Yeah, there's definitely no, um, panic, like, LCBO runs that have to occur- No, exactly. Yeah [laughs]... which is nice. 4:44 What time does it shut? Yeah, [laughs] exactly. Yeah. Oh, that's cool. Now, talking about your guests, when they arrive, would you, like, kinda walk through that experience? They, they show up, and they check in. 4:56 Is there a moment in that sign-in process or where you see them kinda, like, click into cottage mode and, like, get into that relaxed mindset, or, like, just walking through that first guest experience? Yeah. 5:08 Um, I will say there are some that I think they've already clicked in 20 minutes down the road. They're already getting out of the car in vacation mode. So I will say, like, our, we call it our entrance building. 5:22 It's sort of like a three-season style setup, so it's got, like, big bay doors, and it's very, like, it is sheltered, but it is encompassing sort of, like, outside as well. 5:32 So I feel like soon as you are walking in, that kind of, like, adds to it that you're not technically stepping inside. You are sort of still submerged in, like, the Muskoka energy. Yeah. 5:44 But yeah, I think that people sort of, like, get into the entrance building, and it's, like, you know, like, a big sort of, like, cedar style building. So I think that in itself already lends to it. 5:53 Us as staff, like, that's sort of, like, our job is to sort of bring that, like, relaxation, vacation energy soon as they walk through the door. I always kinda make a joke. 6:02 I feel like I work at adult summer camp, is what I feel like my job is. So I feel like as staff, we're almost like camp counselors. 6:08 So it's like when everybody comes in, especially, like, our weekend guests that are sort of staying, you know, you're sort of giving them the rundown on the property and letting them know what's happening and everything like that, so it sort of does feel a little bit like adult summer camp sometimes. 6:21 But, you know, then the doors sort of open up to the spa right beside. So they can sort of see everything right there, and I think that's usually when you sort of see the, like eyes open up- Yeah... 6:30 and are like, "Oh my goodness, I'm so excited for the weekend." So yeah. Yeah. 6:35 You know, if you're, especially if you're coming up, you know, just for the weekend and maybe you haven't experienced Muskoka before or seen just the abundance of la- lakes and nature and all the wilderness- Yeah... 6:44 that's two hours away from Toronto. That's really cool for the first time. When it comes down to your property, I was looking at the map, it's quite a large property. How many buildings are there? 6:55 So we have, oh gosh, I believe, I'm going off of memory here that, um, I believe we have 17 cabins in total. Okay. So yeah, we've got different style of cabins as well, so we have like our little like crash cabins. 7:08 We've got our three-bedroom cabins. We have our two-bedroom cabins, so there's definitely like a variety on the property, which is nice. 7:16 Um, and they've all got their sort of like little hubs as well, just like talking about sort of the property layout. 7:21 So you know, that's like a very common question I get on the phone is when somebody calls in and almost wants sort of like your opinion of like where to stay, and it's, it's hard 'cause there's so many like, like pros and cons for different people for different spaces. 7:35 Like some people really like to be by the lake. 7:37 Some people like to be sort of in the hustle and bustle of the spa, and then we've got also cabins that sort of like overlook the spa that are a little bit more further up, so they're sort of tucked away, but they get to sort of have like that nice view of this, of the property. 7:50 So there's so many options. Yeah. There's really something for everyone. In terms of how long folks typically stay for, is it a weekend? Do some folks stay a little bit longer? A night? Yeah. 8:00 Yeah, I would say our average is two nights, is um- Yeah... pretty standard. You know, obviously like long weekends, people will tend to stay like the entirety of the long weekend. 8:10 We do get some guests that come up also like during the week. I think they like the, also the idea of things being a little bit more quiet, so and then they'll sort of come up. 8:19 I find like our weekday visitors tend to stay a little bit longer 'cause I think they're sort of taking time off work, and this becomes like a little bit of like a weekly tradition for them to come up. It is cool. 8:29 Like I've been with the company for, this'll be my third summer, um, 8:34 and, uh, yeah, like you start to see faces that are constantly coming back, and they want the exact same cabin, and they, like they have their spot that they like. 8:44 Um, they like their time of year that, um, they come up always for, so whether there's like events that are happening sort of in the area that they love to go to, or if it's just like, "This is our girls' weekend that we always go away for." 8:57 So it is really like neat seeing that. And then yeah, just nice to see friendly faces that you haven't seen in a year. Yeah. Becoming a part of that summer tradition has to be a really cool feeling, and- Yeah... 9:08 like just earning guests' trusts and being like, "This is a fun, fundamental part of our summer that we look forward to," and everyone has a- Mm-hmm... 9:16 circle on their calendar and the countdown app running and saying, "We've got two weeks to go." [laughs] That's gotta be a really genuinely cool experience as a, as a manager for the experience that you're providing. 9:26 Did you grow up in Muskoka yourself or did you move into town? No. So I actually reside in, uh, Barrie. Oh, cool. So- Yeah... yeah, so I live in Barrie, but I do, uh, my fiance and I do have, um, a property up that way. 9:41 Okay. So I do have a place to rest my head on those days where I am living and breathing and eating Muskoka Beer Spa. Yeah. So that is, that is nice. So- Perfect... 9:54 so it's n- nice to be able to sort of like get away from it, but also be sort of like submerged in it at the same time. Yeah, like a 40-minute drive, or I think it's around 40 minutes, 40, 45 minutes. Uh, it's an hour. 10:05 Hour? Yeah, it's about an hour. 10:06 Yeah, just 'cause where like Muskoka Beer Spa sort of like sits in the middle of if you're going up Highway 11 or Highway 400, uh, like truthfully, um, I, it depends on the day really, like what's gonna be faster. 10:19 So it, it's just sort of like plunked right in the middle of it. Yeah. An hour commute. Now, I live in Southern Mississauga, but to go- Okay... 10:27 from my place to sometimes just a little bit, call it east of where the Jays play, that can take an hour, and that's 20 kilometers. Yes. I know. Yeah, no, that's, uh... But you know what? 10:39 At least you've got a scenic drive. That's, that's- Yes... that's a thing you got going for you. No. 10:44 [laughs] I will say my favorite time of year to drive to work is fall, just because like, I mean, how could you c- complain with that drive up there? 10:52 'Cause like the colors and everything like that, like I never have a complaint when I'm driving up in the fall. 10:58 It's, it's so beautiful, and I would almost say that I, summer is our busiest time of year, but if somebody was like, "Kirin, when would you want to spend your time at the beer spa?" I would choose the fall hands down. 11:11 It is so beautiful. Mm. Amenities are all hot, so it's like it's so nice to be a little bit cooler outside, not to the point where obviously it's uncomfortable to walk outside. 11:22 But with the weather being a little bit chillier and then s- sort of submerging in the hot tub or jumping in the sauna, like it just, it just hits so right in the fall. Yeah, and that's like, exactly. That's when 11:34 it's not like you're s- it's not like you're doing something where it's a, it's a cold activity. You're, you're in a sauna, you're in a hot tub. You're doing something that's warm, and also- Yeah... you get that view. 11:43 So no, that's, that's fantastic. That was actually gonna be one of my questions was if you had to choose- Oh... summer or fall, what would, what would be your choice? But it's- Fall... yeah. 11:53 I mean, the summer is so nice just 'cause obviously like it's gorgeous outside. 11:58 The lake is obviously prime in the summertime, same with the pool, and then the cold bucket pun- plunge is obviously like a lot more, um, [laughs] tolerable- Yeah. [laughs]... in the summertime. 12:10 So, so yeah, I do see like the appeal of summer. 12:13 Um, it's just, yeah, like I think that I'm just such a sucker for like fall time, and I think just being in Muskoka, and if somebody doesn't necessarily get to experience that all the time if they live in the city, um, I just think it's one of those things where it's just so beautiful to sort of open your door and that's like your view for- Yeah... 12:32 however long your stay is. It's like you're living in a painting. It's- Yes, very much so. Yeah. 12:37 Being in Muskoka- And I guess being in an outdoor environment, is there any activities that you like to participate in the summer? Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, any- In the winter? Yeah. 12:51 I personally am not a huge winter person. So we are open throughout the wintertime. Our amenity list is not as long just because not everything is winterized. 13:04 We are, uh, we are trying to get there, so it is on the to-do list to make the beer spa a full year-round experience. 13:13 So but the wintertime we do have our brewery, we have our, we have a skating rink out in our beer garden, which is really cool. And so guests that are sort of staying with us during the wintertime get to use that. 13:24 Our saunas are still running, and then we have fire pits sort of all along the property. So I would say in the wintertime, that would be my appeal just because- Yeah... I like warmth. 13:34 So, um, and then, uh, we do run a bubbler down by the lake, um, so people can still do a polar plunge, um, and then jump into the sauna right after. I have not yet braved that. Um, [laughs] one day, but not yet. 13:48 I'll have to come down and try that. I tried the cold plunge deal. Well, I first started doing it in university, so I played lacrosse, and just for recovery and stuff they had, um- Yeah... ice baths. 13:57 Well, back then it was called an ice bath. But no, they're phenomenal. I know Bala Bay Inn down the road offers accommodations as well. I think that's a four-kilometer drive. Yes. 14:07 So that's an additional spot for folks to rest their head. It, it is our, uh, so it would be our, like our sister property. So, um, I do actually sort of take care of things over there as well, so wear a lot of hats. 14:20 But yeah, so the Bala Bay Inn is sort of like a historic hotel. We've got 35 rooms. 14:26 It's more of like, obviously, a more traditional hotel style stay, which truthfully some people who are sort of coming up and want to experience the beer spa, we do have guests that would prefer to stay over at the inn just because the whole cottage setup is maybe not necessarily their vibe. 14:41 Um, and they would just prefer that sort of like more traditional hotel style stay. But your access into the beer spa is included, which is like a really huge perk. 14:50 And then we also do provide a free shuttle service between both properties. So if you're staying at the inn, there's no like rock, paper, scissors on who's driving that day. We sort of take care of it. 15:01 It's an on-demand service, so it's basically head to the front desk, and, "I'd like to head over to the beer spa." "Okay. We'll get that set up for you." Which is really nice. 15:10 And then we even have guests that go, um, that are staying at the beer spa, and if they're staying more than a couple of nights, you know, we have our brewery and our distillery right next door that provide food options. 15:19 But, you know, if you've been eating there for a couple nights now, um, and you wanna look for something new, we do have a restaurant over at the inn, so we do have guests that will head over even if they're just heading over to the inn just to grab a bite to eat. 15:31 That's perfect. Yeah, giving a little bit of a, I guess, a change-up in the palate selection for food especially, yeah, sometimes, you know, you're having the same meal every once in a while, and it's nice to switch. 15:42 [laughs] I've been there before. Yeah. 15:44 Well, and I mean, like when you are somewhere new, and you are sort of like in vacation mode, like I feel like there's a lot of people who are very like foodie energy, and they wanna try different things. 15:54 I mean, we also do have a taco truck that's right on site at the beer spa property, and they make a mean taco, let me tell you. Yeah. Um, they're... I have no com- Like the food on property is just phenomenal. 16:06 I've never heard a negative comment about any of our locations for food. Yeah. People tend to walk away quite happy. What's your favorite taco? 16:16 They make, uh, a Baja, like, fish taco, and I would argue it's like the best fish taco I've ever had. It's so good. You'll be seeing me over the summer. Yeah, no, that's- [laughs] That's my favorite too. 16:28 Any of our vegetarian friends, they also make a cauliflower one, which I- Ooh, boy... have never had a cauliflower taco before, um, having one, um, at, they're called El Gringos, and wow, it is 10 out of 10. So good. 16:42 Yeah. I have even people who are huge meat eaters that will try it, and will be like, "Wow." Cauliflower bites are great. Yes. You get cauliflower bites, some Frank's Red or some Buffalo. Yeah, no, that's... 16:53 And it, you know, it's healthy, so I can just sit. [laughs] You know what I mean? Except for the deep-fried part, but yes. That's what I mean. 17:02 I mean, so I've become a big air fryer guy, and I don't know, made chicken wings in it recently, and yeah, there's a lot you can accomplish in them. 17:11 Um, so I went to school up north, and I used to do a lot of fishing and stuff like that, so a lot of fish fries. But when you're frying in oil and stuff like that, it's so messy. So like- It is... 17:20 painting it in one thing, it just makes the experience so much more pleasant, and you can go direct your focus on something else and come back when you hear a beep, which I love. 17:29 [laughs] I honestly use an air fryer probably every day. Yeah. No, it's a microwave. They're, they're so multipurpose. It's great. Oh, yeah. Everything from cooking a little meal. 17:39 There's a dehydrated setting that I use to make sweet potato treats for my dog. No, air fryers are amazing. Um- Fun. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a whole, uh, 17:48 there's, there's a whole thing you can do with, uh, with, with air fryers. No, it's great. And here we are talking about air fryers. [laughs] Air fryers. Panji. [laughs] Yeah, this is... Um, cool. 17:59 Uh, I'd love to learn about the brewery. So you've got- Yeah... a brewery and a distillery. I was in town on Monday. I saw your products, and I'd love to learn more about them. Now- Yeah... 18:10 when it comes down to the products, is it you can purchase on site, but when it comes to finding these at different retail locations outside of the, the property, are there other spots in town that you can get a pint of Clear Lake? 18:24 Uh, no, actually. So you have to come visit us if you- I like it... um, would like our product. So- Yeah... 18:30 yeah, 'cause we do have sort of like small retail spaces in both the brewery and the distillery, so guests can, um, go and pick up there. Um- Yeah... 18:38 obviously we've got a lot of like local cottagers that will always stop in on the Friday when they're coming up and- Yeah... 18:44 grab their six-pack or, um, head over to the distillery and grab like a mix-and-match pack of vodka sodas. So- Oh, perfect... yeah, we are- A one-stop shop only there Love it. I love it. 18:57 And that's great because when you're selling direct to a customer, that's where you get to learn about the product itself, and things that you- Yeah... 19:04 don't necessarily learn when you're looking at maybe a report or something like that. 19:08 You're having these direct relationships with the customer and, you know, sometimes those are the things where if somebody brings up a point, you say, "Oh, yeah, that's actually something that's, you know, notable," and you can bring that back to your staff. 19:18 I, I really do like that sort of business model and having that sort of like direct relationship. Well, and I will say even, too, like our like brewmaster is on site, I would say, most of the time. 19:31 So even for customers, I think that's like a really like cool niche thing that you don't necessarily get to meet the person who is making the beverage that you are constantly consuming. And I'm- Yeah... 19:44 I don't wanna speak on behalf of him, but I'm sure that there's been multiple conversations he's had with customers that have maybe inspired different brews that he's done. Yeah. 19:53 Just hearing like what the people do want, whereas if you're constantly picking up at an LCBO, we're not, we're not necessarily going to hear that feedback. 20:02 So it's kinda nice to have people coming in and consuming our product and talking to the people that handle those things. Yeah, you can tell the cashier, but they're not gonna care. 20:11 [laughs] Yeah, I don't think that they're going to- Okay. [laughs]... reach out to us. You collect Aeroplan? [laughs] Yeah. That's the answer I was looking for. [laughs] Uh, cool. 20:20 Working in cottage country has to be a really cool experience. You know, you mentioned the fall foliage and driving up the highway and seeing all the changing of the seasons and stuff like that. 20:30 You kinda touched on it before, but what's your favorite part about working in cottage country? I mean, I will say like just working outside is very like refreshing. 20:39 It is, you're constantly getting the vitamin D from the sun. 20:43 So, and I think just working, um, in an environment where everyone's sort of like in vacation mode, too, is really nice because everybody is there for a good time. Like, everybody is there. 20:54 They have positive intentions walking in, uh, and like my job and the staff's job is just to like cultivate that and just sort of like pour gasoline on it essentially. Yeah. We don't have to start the fire. 21:06 Everyone's coming in with that energy, and we just pour the gasoline on it and keep that energy rolling the whole time. Yeah, I think just like working outside is sort of like the big highlight of working in Muskoka. 21:18 Like, that's your backdrop. I'm not stuck in an office all day. Yeah. That's really appealing. 21:25 I think that just like the nature of the business itself, like I said, it's just the, the energy that is around dealing with people that are, again, are just there to have a nice time. It's a phenomenal thing to be in. 21:38 But yeah, it's gotta be tough on your social battery. It is. Like, I would say like as the job itself, like it's even when like I'm looking at like hiring, like it is a huge, like it, you're looking for personality plus. 21:51 Yeah. To me, everything else can be taught, but you can't really like teach somebody to be outgoing and bubbly and like personable. Yeah. 21:59 So I feel like that's sort of like when looking at staffing, it, that is the huge factor because that is the energy that we are trying to create, and that is definitely something that I love doing anyways, so it definitely comes a little bit naturally to me- [laughs] 22:14 ... to be full Chatty Cathy. Like, I love taking people around the property. Like, we get a lot of people that just come in and are like, "Can I just get a tour of the space?" And I'm like, "Hands down, sign me up." 22:24 Yeah. [laughs] And I'm like, I am happy to take them on a tour, and yap and talk to them and find out what their life story is, tell them about the spa, so. Yeah. I'm the same way. 22:34 It's definitely like a big personality thing that- Yeah... uh, we definitely try to cultivate. Exactly. 22:40 We're, yeah, we're the perfect weekend visitors, and we're also the perfect tour guides 'cause we love to chat- Yeah... and learn new things. 22:46 It looks like there's a bit of a promotion going on right now when it comes- Mm-hmm... down to booking, just to give people a bit of an idea of like why they should add this into their plans. Yeah. 22:55 So yeah, the promotion right now is geared towards winter stays currently. 22:59 So we are sort of, right now it's sort of a flat rate, which normally in our main season it is like a per person price point that we do just because it includes your access into the spa. Um- Yeah... 23:13 and again, this is sorry, for all like cabin guests. And then during the wintertime, yeah, it's a flat rate for cabins right now. 23:19 Uh, we're also doing a really exciting promo that each guest that is attending for your cabin stay, they get a $25 gift card each that sorta is usable at any of our properties. 23:31 So you can use it at the beer spa itself, you can use it at the brewery, the distillery, or the Bala Bay Inn, and that can be put towards food, beverages, merch. 23:41 If you wanna come back again, you can use your gift card for that. If you wanted to come back for a day visit during the summertime, you could use it for that. So it's like super multipurpose. 23:50 You don't see that very often, like that sort of flexibility with a gift card, 'cause typically- Yeah... there's a lot of, you know, T's and C's on those things. That's great. 23:59 Being, having multiple properties that also offer multiple different things. Yeah. You know, we're not like a Holiday Inn where you can use it at any Holiday Inn, but Holiday Inn only provides so many services, right? 24:11 So it's nice that we have a hotel, we have a spa, we have a brewery with awesome food, we have a distillery with awesome pizza and vodka sodas. Like, you can use it towards any of those things. 24:23 So it is like a really like nice like flexibility thing with those gift cards. I'll have to stop by, and I know that you've sold me on the tacos. Sorry, they're still here. Uh [laughs] Sold you on those tacos. 24:35 Yeah, tacos and air fries will be my takeaway for this conversation. Yeah.
